No matter what skill you want to learn, I help you envision the project you want, break it down into manageable skills and steps, and empower you to take ownership of your work. Whether you want to work from an existing pattern or dream up something of your own, we can do it together.
A note for beginners: This list might look like a lot, and it is! With all the specialized vocabulary here, you might not know where to start. That's okay! Look online for pictures of projects you find inspiring, and then contact me to see how we can build skills to help you get there. (Fun fact: I actually took up knitting in college because I wanted to make cabled leg warmers. While that project idea eventually fell by the wayside, I did eventually learn to make some beautiful cabled mitts.)
I can teach you a variety of hand sewing techniques, including:
construction stitches: running stitch, backstitch, blanket stitch, etc
seam construction techniques, including flat-felled and French seams and blind hems
construction of garments, quilts, home goods, and other items
basic appliqué and simple embroidery embellishments
sewing buttons, eyelets, and other closures
hand-quilting methods
On a machine, you can learn:
how to use a sewing machine, including threading and winding bobbins
how to use a serger, including threading and stitch set-up
basics such as seaming, hemming, and finishing
some machine sewing projects incorporate a few basic hand sewing skills as well
We can also do some simple flat pattern drafting for a custom garment or accessory, or understand and modify an existing commercial pattern.
I have made quilts and garments both by hand and on the machine and you can, too!
I can help you learn:
how to knit, which lets you make lots of items with garter stitch right away
how to purl, which lets you create stockinette stitch, ribbing, and all kinds of textured stitch combinations
shaping, including a variety of increases and decreases
knitting in the round on double-pointed or circular needles
basic colorwork, including jogless stripes and slip-stitch color patterns
finishing techniques, including weaving in ends and blocking
how to follow a written or charted knitting pattern, and how to take notes to make your own pattern
construction of hats, socks, gloves, afghans, toys and other accessories and home goods
I can show you:
basic crochet stitches: single, double, treble, and slip stitches
shaping, including a variety of increases and decreases
working in the round: magic loop, working in spirals or joined rounds
basic colorwork, including stripes and patterns
more advanced stitch techniques and combinations: spiked or crossed stitches, lacework
creating motifs to assemble, such as granny squares
finishing techniques, including weaving in ends and blocking
how to follow a written or charted crochet pattern, and how to take notes to make your own pattern
construction of hats, socks, gloves, afghans, toys and other accessories and home goods
This list is not necessarily exhaustive, but even if I don't have a ton of experience in an area, don't worry! I love learning and am usually able to figure out new skills quickly so I can teach others. Contact me and let's figure it out together!
