New! Drop-in beginner knit & crochet group classes.
You chose to homeschool for a reason, and that lets you be intentional about what you incorporate into your curriculum. I'm an experienced teacher with a background in individualized, holistic education. I would love to be part of your team, sharing the joy of working with fiber, fabric, and more with your family or homeschool group. Handwork skills are a valuable part of a whole-child education. Children gain confidence, creativity, and the satisfaction that comes with saying, "I made it myself!"
Handwork gives learning a physical, tangible form, providing multiple pathways for knowledge to take root. Whether you've explored the Middle Ages, measurement, or monarch butterflies, we can dream up a meaningful and fun follow-up project that summarizes learning. This gives children the opportunity to revisit and review the information from a lesson or unit with a fresh perspective. For instance, I have helped children craft costumes for a mystery history research project, apply math knowledge to draft custom sewing patterns, and examine and reproduce the structures and shapes they see in nature to create their own crocheted plants and animals. Additionally, handwork skills support spatial reasoning, planning, and, best of all, it's fun!
Handwork provides an opportunity for children to engage in service work. I have helped children to sew warm fleece hats to donate to clothing drives, and worked with small groups of students to create auction projects to benefit their nonprofit school - a quilt, a recycled rag rug (pictured here) and a granny square afghan. Child-led projects I have seen include crafting toys for animal shelters, and selling crocheted items and other goods to plant a tree at their school. I would be honored to help your family or group give back to the community, either by participating in an existing effort or assisting the children in designing their own handwork project to benefit a cause that is important to them.
Schedule a recurring time each week for me to work with your child(ren) for private handwork lessons. We can start with just one skill, such as knitting or sewing, and expand from there based on their interests and your curriculum. I have seen children make good progress even if they only spend time working with me during their lesson time, so you don't need to have any expertise to help them in between. I'll meet them where they're at and help them grow!
Get together with other families from your homeschool group or co-op and schedule a recurring handwork group lesson. I will customize instruction to fit your particular group's ages and interests, and help provide a fun and focused opportunity for building community.
Book a short series of private lessons with me for your family to work on a follow-up project as you complete your studies in a specific area.
